Love Thy Neighbor. Okay..but can I shoot their dog?

I have reached a point. Not THE point, but definitely A point. One of the things that I absolutely LOVE about rural America is, nearest neighbors are usually at least a mile away.
I like my peace. Actually, I require it.

So, what do you do, when the neighbor dogs start coming to visit? Run them off right? Well, what if they belong to someone who has never provided them with a lick of training?
And what if, they kill your chickens. Ruin your herding dog. And encourage your dogs to start running too?
And the neighbor/hoarder, cannot seem to get it into their head, that this is not cute. It is not acceptable. And their irresponsibility has cost their neighbor money, peace, lives, and what used to be a good dog.

"Oh my dog just loves you and can't stay away." Good. That way your dog will be close enough that I will be pretty much guaranteed a good shot.
Why should I care if that would make them sad? I was damned sad and angry watching my kid crying over the bloodfest in the middle of our yard.

What is even more frustrating is, the fact, that neighbor has a rather impressive dog kennel. That they never use.
Neighbor waxes poetic over how wonderful it is to have such great neighbors and they hope we never move away.
Me? I just swear a lot under my breath and at the top of my lungs.

People aren't stupid for the most part. They can just be incredibly self-absorbed.

  1. Years ago m y old Golden had some trouble with the neighbors collie. The collie came over and chased the cats , You just didn't F with Tuckers cats! He beat the snot out of the dog ,once , then twice . The second time I paid a $200 vet bill becuas Tucker followed him home to attempt to kill him . I warned them ,I asked them I reminded them,I SAID PLEASE they still let the dog roam free, also in with my cattle . The 3rd time Tuck got ahold of him in my pasture , did a bang up job . I had my brother in law shoot the collie . done. A week later they called and asked if I had seen their sweet doggie... my response? "Not lately"

  2. I like your style Fern. And your dogs. This neighbor said, "well they were only chickens is that a big deal?"
"And my dog just loves to kill birds so you probably should find a home for the ones you have left and not get anymore."
    WTF!?!
Never offered to replace or pay for the birds either.
I need a better farm dog. Nelson would have been in the same league as your Tucker.

  3. Oh it gets better. Apparently today neighbor runs over his own dog with his horse trailer.
I get a phone call that this has happened and she is laying in the culvert. And could I do something.
It would seem dog is not hurt too badly because she has now been to my house 4 times and is I believe currently hanging out in my yard. After trying to run my horses in their pens.
Did I mention that neighbor did not stop to deal with his dog. No going riding was more important

  4. Neigbors had a dalmation that ran night and day(should we say totally neglected?) We ran him off, had a rather territorial collie at the time. About a week later, the dog disappeared. Seems someone delivered some lead for him. Sure as hell did not break my heart. The dog did not truly deserve it, the owner did but shooting humans is not allowed. Damn.

  5. Can we shoot our neighbors? Wouldn't that make life a whole lot better?

Our neighbor has been told a number of times to keep his dogs out of our pastures. Not all horses like dogs. Yet in his words, if the dogs get kicked or stepped on- "They won't do that again." Yeah and if you got your damn dog fixed- she wouldn't produce any more for you to take to the pound because you can't find homes for them.

I agree with Phaedra. The animals don't deserve it, the owners do. What if I "missed" the dog, but my aim was true? Think that would hold up?
